Vercy Jane Crochet Richards Obituary

Vercy Jane Crochet Richards was born on May 1, 1942, in Hathaway, Louisiana, and died Monday, November 6, 2023, at Richland Parish Hospital of Delhi.

Vercy was raised as a true Cajun. She grew up in Jennings, Louisiana where she met her husband, Travis “Cootsie” Richards, while he was working in Jennings for an oil construction company. Cootsie and Vercy were married in 1963, began their life together in Delhi, Louisiana, and remained married for 60 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cootsie, by just four weeks. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Marius J. Crochet and Evelyna Crochet, and her seven siblings.

Vercy was a wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved her three children and their spouses: Kim Richards, Troy Richards and wife Amy, and Dana Richards Hale and husband David, all of Delhi. As a grandmother, she cherished all five of her grandchildren: Langdon Travis Richards, Larkin Douglas Richards, Eliza Quinn Richards, Christopher Lawrence Hale and wife Sydney, and Thomas Quinn Hale and wife Brooke. She also had the pleasure of being called great grandmother by Vivian Rose Hale and Cecelia Ann Hale. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She loved them all “big like the world”.

Vercy’s main occupation was wife and mother, but she also worked from time to time at Dairy Delight, where her favorite dish was Bud LaPrarie’s hotdog with sauce, minus the weenie. Over the years, she also worked at Thomson Drug and Ralph Cheeks’ jewelry store.

Vercy could always be found in her kitchen cooking soup, chicken fricassee, strawberry pie, gumbo, and such. She loved to share it with family and friends. She even lived next door to her sister-in-law and brother-and-law, Glynda and Leland Cobb, with whom she shared many a meal, Vercy as the cook sometimes and Glynda and Leland as the cooks at other times.

Vercy loved being around people and participating in various types of games. She enjoyed playing Pokeno with her friends, Shirley Gibson and Ursula Hosea, whom she has dearly missed over the last four years. She also enjoyed going to Vicksburg to the casinos for food and fun.

Vercy was raised in the Catholic Church, and her heart remained Catholic till her death.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Corey Albritton and his staff for all of the tender love and care they showed Vercy.

Visitation for Vercy Jane Richards will be held at a later date as well as a family graveside service.
