Oman M. Rutherford, of Goodwill, LA was born July 4, 1943. He departed this life March 26, 2019, after a week in hospice surrounded by family and friends. He was the oldest of two children born to Helen Brock Freeland and Franklin Rutherford in northern Arkansas. In 1952 he moved to Goodwill, LA and grew up there where he excelled as a basketball and baseball athlete, later playing semi-pro baseball in Texas as a left-handed pitcher. He served in the United States Army stationed in Bossier City on the Air Force base as an Army NORAD operator. He worked for International Paper both in Bastrop and Mobile, then drove a truck for Sawyer, KLLM, and Apache Chemical many years before retiring.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Brock Freeland, his father Franklin Rutherford, his sisters Eddie Ruth Rutherford and Alma Bagby. He is survived by one sister, Jane Rutherford; two sons, Patrick Myers (Loleta) and Stephen Myers (April) both of Crossett, Arkansas; two granddaughters, Alison Myers and TaLyn Myers; two great grandchildren, Nate and Brooklyn; three nieces, Patricia Bagby, Debbie Ketten, and Ollileen Edison (Greg); two special great nieces, Angie Sanches Turbeville and Britnee Bagby; his long-time friend and ex-wife, Ginger Rutherford; and four long-time special friends, Jessie and Shane of Oak Grove; Mack (H.L.) McBroom of Bastrop, and Billy Wayne Bagby of Monroe.
Oman was cremated at his request and his remains will be laid to rest in Rayville, Louisiana, at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery Monday, April 22, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Home, Oak Grove, LA.
The family requests that any memorials be given to Hospice Home Care of Monticello, Arkansas 71655 or any local hospice care center. The special care given by the Monticello hospice center workers is greatly appreciated. These dedicated people are truly angels here on earth.
